Ecology in the festival tent
The Munich Oktoberfest is considered as the flagship of Bavarian tourism. Oktoberfest hosts take responsibility for environmental and climate protection and send a strong signal to the entire tourism industry in Bavaria. And it fills us with pride that the Oktoberfest is nowadays regarded worldwide as a model for environmentally friendly large-scale events.
In the following, we show you how much is already being done in our festival tent for sustainable management, from measures to save emissions and energy, to organic and regional cuisine, to waste avoidance, sensible recycling and offsetting residual emissions.
With the state seal of quality and origin “Tested Quality – Bavaria”, you as a consumer can be sure that you can rely on the regional origin and high quality of our products. Many of our ingredients are produced exclusively in Bavaria, in accordance with defined quality standards in production and processing. These currently include:
Potato and coleslaw – Weisl Gemüse GmbH
Baked goods – Höflinger Müller GmbH
Eggs – Eierhof Engl
Pork – Vinzenzmurr
Short transportation routes protect the environment and create transparency. The classification “Excellent Bavarian Cuisine” is a joint project of the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry and the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association DEHOGA Bayern. The seal is awarded to establishments that focus on typical regional cuisine and regional products. It serves as a trademark for high-quality cuisine that is typical and credible for the region.
Festhalle Schottenhamel offsets its annual residual emissions by providing financial support for climate protection projects through Aktion Zukunft+. In order to reduce our emissions, we use the Ökoprofit environmental management system, among other things, to identify potential energy savings.
CO2 offsetting is part of Festhalle Schottenhamel’s comprehensive sustainability strategy. Above all, because responsibility is assumed for specific projects in our region.
We are proud that we have taken a further step on our path to greater ecology, animal welfare and fairness by obtaining certification for the organic label. Whenever possible, we source food in organic quality. At the Oktoberfest 2024 these are:
Organic cheese specialties – Andechser Molkerei, Andechs
Organic coffee – Merchant & Friends, Herrmannsdorf
Organic vegetables – Gessler fruit and vegetable wholesale
Organic ice cream – Del Fiore, Munich
Organic beer mustard – Münchner Kindl Senf, Fürstenfeldbruck
Organic goat’s cheese – Ziegenbande, Utting
These other ingredients are also exclusively organic: red onions, radishes, potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, grapes, fried onions, butter, soup chicken, rye bread, raisins, almonds, apple sauce, rum, sugar, Pinot Blanc

In order to receive the “Excellent Bavarian Festival Tent” seal, the tent operator must prove that products and services meet high standards and that their regional origin is guaranteed. As a basic prerequisite for participation in the test, the regular restaurant must have been awarded the title “Excellent Bavarian Cuisine”. The Festhalle Schottenhamel was not only awarded the seal for the fourth time in a row, but the Festhalle was also the first marquee to receive this honor in 2017.
The landlords were the main driving force behind the fact that the award is now also available in this form for festival tents.
The Ecological project for integrated environmental technology (Ökoprofit) is an environmental consulting program offered by many municipalities in Bavaria for local companies. The participating companies are supported in their implementation with workshops, exchange of experience, on-site advice and practical working materials. The companies learn how to take technical and organizational measures to save raw materials, water and energy, avoid waste and reduce emissions. At the same time, the workforce is sensitized to environmental issues.
Festhalle Schottenhamel has been an officially certified “Munich ÖKOPROFIT company” for several years now and is part of the Ökoprofit Club, an energy efficiency and climate protection network. By participating, the company is making a contribution to achieving the climate and energy policy goals of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The following ingredients and products are both organic and organic Bavarian, i.e. organic products from our region:
Organic milk – Andechser Molkerei, Andechs
Organic flour – Wolfmühle, Forstinning
Organic ancient grain and organic lentils – Chiemgaukorn, Trostberg

Since 2022, Festhalle Schottenhamel has been working with the Foodsharing Munich initiative to combat food waste. A “foodsaver” in the establishment ensures that food and dishes that are still in perfect condition are reliably collected after the kitchen closes and made available to those in need via foodsharing, in compliance with all the prescribed hygiene requirements. In this way, the business can reduce food waste and disposal costs and consciously set an example against food waste.
- We purchase M eco-electricity with a surcharge for renewable energies.
- A solar thermal system helps us to produce hot water.
- Our goods are transported exclusively by electric vehicles from the main restaurant to the Theresienwiese.
- A water recycling plant and other cost-saving measures help us to reduce water consumption.
- Every year we are coached and audited by an external energy consultant.
- We have spent years developing a lighting and kitchen concept that helps us to save as much electricity as possible.
